Jones Myers shares expertise with next generation of family lawyers

Our collaborative family law experts, consultant Norman Taylor and partner Nicki Mitchell, who is also a trained Mediator, have shared insights into collaborative family law and the Mediation process with students from Leeds Beckett University.

Aligned with the firm’s ethos of helping to mentor and develop the next generation, the session at our Leeds office put the spotlight on how the processes can help couples avoid costly, traumatic and public litigation in court.

Norman is a pioneer of collaborative of family law whose involvement with the University and mentoring students spans over several years while Nicki was the first collaborative family lawyer in York.

The duo outlined to students how the collaborative and mediation processes put separating couples in control of the divorce process, with particular emphasis on the interests of any children of the family, enabling them to work together with their respective lawyers to achieve the right outcome. Feedback from attendees was extremely positive.

Emily Hughes said: “I enjoyed the day at Jones Myers, it was very insightful to see a genuine, no nonsense view of what it is to be a family law solicitor. We could not have had nicer or more approachable people leading the session.”

Tailer Punton commented: “I am grateful to Jones Myers for allowing us to find out more about collaborative family law and the process of mediation. So, thank you to you all, the insight has encouraged me to go even further in my legal aspirations.”

Fellow student Sian Thurkettle, added: “As a law student we don’t really get the opportunity to talk to solicitors and I would say that the session offered me a wealth of knowledge in regard to life in the family sector.

“Not only did it provide me with helpful advice but also an opportunity to work with in the group and look at examples of situations we may deal with. Giving a more realistic idea of what day to day life would entail. I believe this has been a useful stepping stone in seeing where I want to be in the future.”

Said Norman: “As champions of giving back to our communities and sharing our extensive experience, it’s rewarding to receive such upbeat feedback and helping students with their aspirations and careers.”
