The 2012 Purple Pirates comprising Sarah Dickinson, Andrew Fox, Richard Peaker, Anthony Parrish, Katie Radford and Emma Weatherill enjoyed a swashbuckling afternoon at Roundhay Park lake to support Martin House Children’s Hospice, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Almost 40 teams of 10 paddlers threw themselves into the occasion – and are on target to jointly raise £30,000 for the charity which needs to raise £4.9million every year to continue its fantastic work. There was a great buzz from those taking part and from their families and friends who turned out in force to cheer them on. The Purple Pirates finished a respectable 22nd out of 37 teams.

Our team thoroughly enjoyed supporting Martin House which opened its doors to children and their families in 1987 – and was the second children’s hospice in the UK. Providing family-led care for children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses, the hospice is a place where children, young people and their families can stay from time to time along their journey and find support, rest and practical help.

Well done to all the participants who gave up their Sunday and their muscle power to make the event such a success.
